HFL C Team Football Doubles Up Dundee 26-13

By Wayne Childs 10/21/2014, 4:00pm EDT

C Team Cruises to Win over Jr. Scots

The HFL Youth Cougars Football C Team has made a habit of playing very stingy defense this season. The Cougars dominant defense made its presence known right away in its home game against Dundee on Sunday. After pushing Dundee backwards on the first two plays of the game, HFL forced a fumble on third down, and Carson Joint swiftly recovered it for the Cougars. Following a long sweep by Drew Angelo, Preston Yates ran it in for a touchdown. Angelo tacked on an extra point to make the score 7-0 HFL. The HFL defense continued to hold strong, forcing the ball over on down on the next Dundee series. The Cougars displayed their aerial attack capabilities in the form of a long Matt Meacham pass to Nolan Smith on the very first play in their next series. This pass set up the HFL offense with a short field, and Carson Joint broke loose up the middle for a rushing score, extending the Cougars lead to 13-0.

As if that start wasn’t difficult enough for Dundee, they misplayed the ensuing kickoff and HFL Special Teams standout Donnell Hall recovered the ball deep in Dundee territory. Nolan Smith wasted no time in making the Jr. Scots pay for that mistake, rushing for HFL’s third touchdown on the day, making the score 19-0. HFL’s defense continued to shut down the Dundee offense throughout the first half. Carson Joint stripped a Dundee runner of the ball, putting HFL back in position for another score. Donnell Hall streaked down the sideline on another HFL rushing touchdown late in the second quarter. Matt Meacham added an extra point pass to Landon Hammond, making the score 26-0 going into halftime.

The second half would see Dundee making effective adjustments not only to their defense, but were also able to muster some scoring drives of their own in the second half. After making their first first down of the game early in the second half, Dundee would light up the scoreboard with a TD, cutting the HFL lead to 26-7. After giving up a big run by Troy Mooney, and a big pass play to Hammond, the Jr. Scots held HFL for the first time on the day, gaining the ball back on downs. Dundee then displayed an effective power running game, driving the ball 80 yards for their next score, making it a 26-13 game early in the 4th quarter. Despite the significant swing in momentum, the Cougars were able to settle things down and cruise the rest of the way for the win. Nolan Smith, Jack Harvey, Troy Mooney, and Austyn Crego made some big defensive stops for HFL down the stretch. The C Team finished the season with 6 wins and 2 losses. It was a great season overall, and HFLYFC looks forward to seeing the boys back in action next year!

Cougars C Team Shuts Out Newark 6-0 in Defensive Battle

Lone Touchdown Run Proves Enough to Propel HFL to Victory

A long QB keeper touchdown run in the first quarter of play by Nolan Smith would prove to be all the scoring that the HFL Cougars C-team would need in defeating the Newark Jr. Reds 6-0 in FLYFCL play on a cold, gray, windswept Sunday in Honeoye Falls. After scoring in the first quarter, it appeared that HFL would continue to light up the scoreboard more, but it was not to be. Despite some long runs by Troy Mooney, and some powerful chain-moving gallops by Carson Joint, HFL was unable to cash in on an opportunistic Newark defense. Matt Meacham added a long passing play to Nolan Smith, but an untimely fumble on a subsequent play gave the ball to the Reds on the 3 yard line.

The story of the day would prove to be HFL's stifling defense, which has been a consistent strength most of the year. Newark appeared to be on their way to scoring in the second quarter, but Troy Mooney was able to make a touchdown-saving tackle after a 70-yard run by a Red's running back. HFL took a 6-0 lead into halftime, and would never relinquish it. Newark received the second half kick, but was unable to move the ball consistently against the Cougars. Jack Harvey made a thunderous hit for a huge loss on a key fourth down play, putting an exclamation point on HFL's dominant defensive display. A critical Newark miscue in the form of a holding penalty negated what appeared temporarily to be a tying touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Newark would never get another chance, as HFL defenders Caleb Snyder, James Zona, and Aaron Fasick clamped down on Newark's following drive. HFL experienced a few miscues of their own, costing them a few more chances to score on several fumbles down the stretch. In one last attempt to tie the game, Newark put on a drive that was slowed on a key Landon Hammond tackle, then a broken up pass by Matt Meacham. The game was iced by HFL on an Aaron Fasick interception with 39 seconds left on the clock. The big win against the Junior Reds makes HFL 5-2 on the 2014 campaign. The Cougars close out the 2014 season at home on October 19 at 10:00 AM against the Dundee Jr. Scots.

Cougars C-Team Outlasts Jordan-Elbridge 34-25

HFL Wins Hard-Fought Match with Eagles

The HFL Youth Cougars C-Team made the long ride home from Jordan-Elbridge a happy one by notching a win against the host Eagles 34-25. Jordan-Elbridge opened the scoring in the contest, but was quickly answered by a Carson Joint 43-yard scoring run with 5:14 left in the first quarter. HFL converted the extra point on a Matt Meacham to Nolan Smith pass to give the Cougars a 7-6 lead. HFL continued their superior special teams play, pinning J-E deep in its own territory on a great kick and cover. After a big tackle for a loss by Preston Yates, HFL’s Troy Mooney picked off an Eagle’s pass to give the Cougars the ball on the 36 yard line of J-E. Carson Joint then quickly put the Cougars up 14-6 on a 16 yard touchdown run. The day would prove to clearly be Mr. Joint’s on the next J-E series, as #44 stripped the ball from the Eagles running back, giving HFL another prime scoring opportunity in J-E territory. Donnell Hall electrified the crowd with a dazzling 28-yard scamper, taking the ball down to the Eagles 20 yard line. Jordan-Elbridge’s defense stiffened, however, and held the Cougars without a score.

Momentum started to shift in the contest when J-E was also able to strip a ball, taking it in for a touchdown with only 23 seconds left in the half. After a nice long passing play from Matt Meacham to Preston Yates, the Eagles defense once again locked down and denied any more scoring by HFL. The Cougars maintained their lead at 14-12 going into the half.

The HFL Cougars came out of the break hungry for the end zone, and put together the game’s next scoring drive. After effectively moving the ball downfield on several plays, Preston Yates was able to break off an exciting 27-yard touchdown run. Nolan Smith tacked on the extra point on a QB keeper, extending the HFL lead to 21-12. J-E would not go quietly. The Eagles began to take advantage of HFL’s inability to contain the outside run, and effectively drove downfield. Despite some nice plays on defense by Giovanni D’Anna, Zach Tooley, Aaron Fasick, and Jack Harvey, the Eagles were able to score, cutting the HFL lead to 21-18. On the next drive, HFL countered with the strong running of Carson Joint, moving the ball effectively downfield. Drew Angelo made a spectacular run all the way down to the J-E 3 yard line, and although appearing to be out of bounds, was ruled to have fumbled upon being tackled, giving the ball to the Eagles. HFL’s defense, and particularly Landon Hammond, would prove too strong for J-E, however, forcing them to turn the ball over on downs at the 20 yard line. The Cougars wasted no time in taking advantage of the great field position, punching the ball in for a touchdown on a QB keeper run by Nolan Smith, making the score 27-18.

The resilient Eagles would not quit, however. Again exploiting the outside edge, J-E wasted no time in putting more points on the board with a 56-yard scamper that drew the game within one score at 27-25. With little time left on the clock, HFL went back to its strength, the power running duo of Joint and Smith, to seal the victory. Another QB keeper by Smith resulted in a touchdown, followed by an extra point pass to Yates, making the final score 34-25. This victory marks back to back wins for the squad, making the C-Team 4-2 on the season. The Cougars finish up the season with two final games at home. The HFL C-Team faces Newark next Sunday, October 5th, 10:00AM at HFL High School.
