Cougars B Team Drops Jr. Scots 37-13

By Wayne Childs 10/21/2014, 3:45pm EDT

HFL Offense, Defense too Much for Jr. Scots

The HFL B Team started off quickly against Dundee on Sunday, with Christian Coler returning the opening kickoff to the Jr. Scots 40 yard line. HFL went to the big artillery on 4th and 3, giving the ball to Nate Ross, who drove to the Dundee 5 yard line. Mason Wanzenreid punched it in on the next play on a QB sneak, putting the Cougars up 6-0. Dundee showed the ability to run the ball early behind a good offensive line push, effectively employing a power running game. HFL’s defense stiffened on big plays by Preston Huff, Ryan Sanza, and J.T. Killenbec, and eventually forced the ball over on downs. After long runs by Nate Ross and Zac Meacham, Ross ran in a 15 yard touchdown. A completed extra point pass from Wanzenreid to Killenbec made the score 13-0 late in the first quarter. In the next series, Dundee attempted an ill-advised lateral pass that would prove to be costly. Nolan Yates was able to pick off the mishandled ball, setting up HFL with great field position once again. Brody Young then fired a great pass to a wide-open Jack Graney for a long TD, putting the Cougars up 19-0.

Dundee would not quit, however, coming right back with a TD run, cutting the HFL lead to 19-7. The Cougars came right back behind excellent blocking by George Walker, Gunnar Wetzel, and Benjamin McDougall. Patrick Lustyk fired up the jets and took a reverse all the way in for a score to put HFL up 25-7 at the half.

The second half began right where the first left off. Following a long Nate Ross run, Mason Wanzenreid punched the ball in on a QB sneak for a second time on the day extending the Cougars lead to 31-7. On the ensuing HFL kickoff, a speedy Jaden Inboune made an amazing play for the loose ball and came up with it. Jaden has consistently made huge plays all year on special teams for the Cougars. Patrick Lustyk then added his second TD of the game to put the Cougars up 37-7 late in the third quarter. From there on out, the story was all about the Cougar defense, which was not about to yield with another victory in sight. J.T. Killenbec made a key interception on the last play of the 3rd quarter, shutting down any Dundee bid for a comeback. HFL would effectively burn the clock for most of the 4th quarter, with Colt Green and J.T. Killenbec running effectively behind strong blocking by Charles Kirby, Preston Huff, and Branden Levine. Dundee added one more score, but the Cougars closed out their sixth win of the season, winning 37-13. The B Team won their final four games of the season, finishing with a   6-2 record. It was another great season, enjoyed by all. We welcome back all returning players in 2015, and wish all players who are moving on the very best. Thanks for the great memories, boys!
