A Tale of Two Halves!

The rain that pelted the C-Team in their season opener at Dundee on Sunday August 21st continued mercilessly throughout the B-Team contest that followed. No relief from the rain was anywhere in sight … nor was any relief in sight for the Dundee Jr. Scotts. On the very first offensive play from scrimmage, Cooper Levin handed the ball to Carson Joint, who took it around the right side of the line for a 26 yard score. The extra point attempt that followed was also converted by Joint to put the HFL squad up quickly 7-0. A strong defensive stand, a fumble by HFL, another 4-and-out by Dundee, and one more offensive play by HFL would produce 6 more points as Drew Angelo raced down the left sideline for a 54 yard touchdown. The extra point was no good and the score stood at 13-0 at the end of the 1st quarter.  On the first offensive position of the 2nd quarter by the Jr. Scots, Conlan Rorick recovered a fumble on the Dundee 39 yard line and put the young Cougar squad in great field position. Troy Mooney had two big runs to set up Joint’s 2nd touchdown of the game to put the Cougars firmly in the lead 19-0. The extra point attempt failed, and it looked as if the HFL B-team was unstoppable offensively … or so it seemed. On Dundee’s next possession, the Jr. Scotts running back broke into the clear for what looked to be a sure touchdown, but Nolan Smith made an outstanding tackle on the sideline coming all the way from the opposite defensive end position to drive him out at the 15 yard line. Unfortunately for HFL, the Dundee squad was able to punch the ball in for the TD 2 plays later and tack on the extra point to go into halftime trailing the Cougars 19-7.

The nonstop rain took its toll on the scoring in the 3rd quarter, as neither team was able to muster up any kind of offense. The score remained 19-7 going into the 4th and final quarter of play. HFL looked to be in the driver’s seat as they started the 4th with the ball deep in their own territory, employing a ground and pound attack to slowly but surely move the ball down to Dundee’s end of the field. The Jr. Scots defense proved too much and thwarted the drive on their own 23 yard line, but not until the Cougars had eaten up most of the 4th quarter clock, leaving only a little over 3 minutes left in the contest. Barring a quick long score and a recovered onsides kick, the Cougars looked to have the game in the bag. Two plays later, the Jr, Scots scored on a 77 yard run to put themselves in striking distance at 19-13 with 2 minutes left to play. A huge stop by Smith on the extra point attempt kept the Cougars up by 6 with the onsides kick attempt by Dundee on the ensuing kickoff inevitable. Luckily for HFL, the kick only managed to cover 8 yards and the ball was awarded to the Cougars, first and ten at the Dundee 48 yard line. Some creative time-management by the officials made for an exciting ending, somehow keeping the Cougars from running out the clock and allowing the Jr. Scots to get the ball back with 16 seconds remaining. Two plays later however, the final score was HFL 19, Dundee 13, and the Youth Cougar B-team had notched its first win of the 2106 season!
