A strange October tropical downpour made playing conditions tough, but the HFL Cougar C Team came out on top in Penn Yan, winning convincingly 19-6.

In its first possession, HFL engaged in a grinding drive that culminated in a bootleg run for a touchdown by Cougars quarterback Brody Young. Penn Yan responded by effectively employing their power running game, getting into the Cougars red zone. The torrential downpours and sloppy conditions would prove to be too much for both offenses, as the Mustangs and Cougars both fumbled the ball away on consecutive plays. Some key tackles made by Hayden Meehan and JT Killenbec enabled HFL to hold the short field and take a 6-0 lead into halftime.

The rain held off during halftime, but then resumed its hardest downpour of the day just as the second half of play resumed. The rain wreaked havoc on both offenses, causing numerous fumbles on early possessions. Penn Yan managed to find the grip on the ball for a while, once again employing a punishing inside run game. As the Mustangs entered the red zone, the Cougars defense led on big plays by Jack Harvey and Donnell Hall, were able to once again stuff Penn Yan on a 4th down and goal situation.

After recovering the ball on downs, HFL faced a 3rd and 7 situation when JT Killenbec took off on an exhilarating 96 yard touchdown run down the visiting sideline. Zac Meacham took an end-around pitch from Brody Young in for the extra point to make it 13-0 HFL with three minutes left in the third. Penn Yan was not done, however, and immediately stormed back with a long touchdown run to cut the HFL lead to 13-6. If Penn Yan gained any hopes for victory, they were quickly dashed by a JT Killenbec kickoff return for a touchdown to make the score 19-6 at the end of the third quarter. HFL’s defense proved up to the task of defending the lead the rest of the way, led by Meacham, Killenbec, Hall, and Nolan Smith. The C Team Cougars are now 4-2 on the season, and go to Pittsford to face Seneca Falls in their final game of the season next Sunday, Oct. 13 at 12:00PM.
