Stifling Defense and Electric Offense Becoming a Theme

The HFL B Team blew out their Dundee hosts 33-0 with a stout defensive play and a multi-faceted run game. The B team has not yielded a point in league play through their second contest. The Cougars defense set the tone early with a punishing defensive effort that seemed to stop anything Dundee attempted to do on offense. Jake Easton, Jason Hoffman, Preston Huff, and Turner Wilson all contributed with big defensive stops in the early minutes of the game. HFL’s first possession would prove to be a theme for the day- Cougars in the end zone. Dylan Nichols employed a nifty spin move on his first carry to set up a 45 yard run to the Dundee two yard line. That allowed QB Mitch Slymon to score on a keeper up the middle. He then converted on an extra point pass to Turner Kamm to give the Cougars an early 7-0 lead. HFL continued to stymie the Jr. Scots next drive, often gang tackling defenders in a true team defensive effort. Nolan Yates came up with a big stop to close out the first quarter. Early in the second, after a few punishing runs, Dylan Nichols executed an impressive pancake block of a Dundee defender to clear a path for Mitch Slymon on a bootleg run that he would take forty yards for a score. The Cougars displayed more great kick coverage, picking up a Dundee fumble on the ensuing kickoff. HFL would make Dundee pay, executing sweeps, pitch options, and off tackle runs that would culminate in a Dylan Nichols TD run. Slymon’s extra point pass to Nate Ross made it a 20-0 lead going into halftime. The second half would pick up right where the first half ended; with HFL’s Jake Easton taking the opening kickoff all the way back for a TD. In an attempt to catch up quickly, Dundee would go to the air, but was picked off by the Cougar’s Evan Macko. With a 26-0 lead in hand, HFL kicked the ground game into low gear and began some clock-eating drives led by Robert Greer and Nichols. Mitch Slymon would add another TD run and Mason Wanzenreid would throw an extra point pass to Jack Graney to make the score 33-0. The B Team played a complete team effort, executing wonderfully on offense and defense. The offensive and defensive lines deserve credit for blowing holes open and controlling the line of scrimmage as a unit. It was a great day to be a Cougar. The B Team Cougars are now 2-0 on the year.
