Battle of Unbeatens Ends in Cougar Defeat

A matchup of unbeaten FLYFCL B-Team powerhouses proved to be a great one on Sunday, with the Eagles of Jordan-Elbridge edging out the HFL Youth Cougars 21-13. Despite finding the magic formula for success through the air, time and a few key errors in recovering several J-E squib kicks caught up with the Cougars in a hard fought game.

Mitchell Slymon had a hot hand at QB for the Cougars. He connected on 6 out of 7 passes on the day, including a beautifully thrown deep ball to a wide open Derek Childs over the middle for about 35 yards.

Jordan-Elbridge jumped on the board first, setting the tone for the day with a physical, well-executed brand of football. The Cougars answered right back, promptly sprinting down the field on a long running play to knot the game 7-7. Both teams would elevate the physical nature of their defensive play throughout the half, holding each other scoreless. The Cougars were led on defense by some exceptionally hard hitting by Jon Kabes and Joshua Griffith. J-E coaches could be heard directing their players to try to block these two Cougar standouts in the second quarter. After making some halftime adjustments, J-E skillfully used a combination of strong between the tackles running and some well-executed sweeps and reverses to keep the Cougars defense back on their heels at times, adding two unanswered touchdowns to jump out to a 21-7 lead.

The Cougars were not finished, however. Sam Tripi and leading tackler Dylan Nichols ratcheted up the physicality on defense and began stuffing J-E drives. This gave the Cougars an opportunity to put together a nice drive behind the exceptional blocking of Jon Kabes. The Cougars capped the drive by punching in a Slymon keeper for a fourth quarter TD, cutting the lead to 21-13 with just a few minutes left. However, J-E was able to regroup and put together a masterful drive that ran out the clock, icing the game 21-13. The Cougars are looking forward to avenging this hard-fought loss with a win at home against the Eagles on Sunday, October 7th.
